Heterogeneous Sediment Input at the Nankai Trough Subduction Zone: Implications for Shallow Slow Earthquake Localization

چکیده

Subducted sediment plays a key role in modulating pore pressure and seismic behavior at subduction zones. We investigated the character of incoming sediments to test how basement variations relate along-strike changes within accretionary prism plate boundary conditions Nankai Trough. High-resolution data reveal for first time presence countourite mounded drifts Shikoku Basin. These features have probably introduced permeability heterogeneities into an otherwise homogenous mud-dominant unit. Additionally, we found that normal faults this unit are more extensive than previously documented, which enhances fluid transport. The wedge taper is correlative with thickness facies turbidite thickness. This may be due associated contourite deposits faults, or absence thick deposits. Turbidite can either aid drainage margin where they not confined by topography, contribute high pressures less permeable mudstone topography. When subducted, localized compartments excess provide necessary slow slip behavior. determined likely related subducting topographic characteristics, vary on local (<10 km) scale.

Slow earthquakes linked along dip in the Nankai subduction zone.

We identified a strong temporal correlation between three distinct types of slow earthquakes distributed over 100 kilometers along the dip of the subducting oceanic plate at the western margin of the Nankai megathrust rupture zone, southwest Japan. In 2003 and 2010, shallow very-low-frequency earthquakes near the Nankai trough as well as nonvolcanic tremor at depths of 30 to 40 kilometers were ...

Distribution of dehalogenation activity in subseafloor sediments of the Nankai Trough subduction zone.

Halogenated organic matter buried in marine subsurface sediment may serve as a source of electron acceptors for anaerobic respiration of subseafloor microbes. Detection of a diverse array of reductive dehalogenase-homologous (rdhA) genes suggests that subseafloor organohalide-respiring microbial communities may play significant ecological roles in the biogeochemical carbon and halogen cycle in ...

Thermal considerations in inferring frictional heating from vitrinite reflectance and implications for shallow coseismic slip within the Nankai Subduction Zone

Frictional properties within the upper few kilometers of subduction zones are generally thought to inhibit rupture propagation. Understanding whether large rapid slip propagates to the surface during megathrust earthquakes is important for characterizing tsunami hazard. Recent vitrinite reflectance analysis by Sakaguchi et al. (2011) on cores from the NanTroSEIZE drilling transect at the Nankai...

Earthquake hazards on the cascadia subduction zone.

Large subduction earthquakes on the Cascadia subduction zone pose a potential seismic hazard. Very young oceanic lithosphere (10 million years old) is being subducted beneath North America at a rate of approximately 4 centimeters per year. The Cascadia subduction zone shares many characteristics with subduction zones in southern Chile, southwestern Japan, and Colombia, where comparably young oc...

Earthquake faulting in subduction zones: insights from fault rocks in accretionary prisms

Subduction earthquakes on plate-boundary megathrusts accommodate most of the global seismic moment release, frequently resulting in devastating damage by ground shaking and tsunamis. As many earthquakes occur in deep-sea regions, the dynamics of earthquake faulting in subduction zones is poorly understood. However, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Expe...
